TV Mounting Height Guide: Get It Right the First Time

Mounting a TV at the wrong height is the most common mistake we see — and once the holes are drilled, moving it means patching and repainting. Here is how to get it right the first time.

Start with your seat. Sit where you normally watch TV and look straight ahead. The center of the screen should sit roughly at your eye level when seated. For most living room sofas, that puts the center of the TV about 42 to 48 inches from the floor, but your seating height and TV size change the number, so measure your own setup rather than copying a neighbor's.

Measure before you drill. Measure the height of your TV, find its center, and mark that center point on the wall at your seated eye level. Then hold the mount's wall plate against the wall and mark the bolt holes. A quick paper template — trace the mount on cardboard and tape it to the wall — lets you check the position from your seat before any drilling.

Find the studs. A TV must be anchored into wall studs, not just drywall. Use a stud finder and confirm with a small pilot hole: solid wood resistance means you found a stud, hollow dust means you missed. Studs in most homes sit 16 inches apart. If your mount's holes do not line up with studs, use a mount with a wider wall plate or add a plywood backing board screwed into two studs.

Pick the right mount. A fixed (flush) mount sits closest to the wall and works best when you watch straight on. A tilt mount lets you angle the screen down, which helps when the TV sits above a fireplace or a tall console. A full-motion mount pulls out from the wall and swivels, which is ideal for corners, open-plan rooms, and bedrooms where you watch from more than one spot.

Hide the cables. Loose cables hanging under a TV spoil the look and collect dust. In-wall cable kits hide power and HDMI cables behind the drywall, and paintable cord covers do the same job without opening the wall. Plan the cable route before you mount, not after.

Mistakes to avoid. Mounting too high is the number one error — above a fireplace often puts the screen well above eye level and strains your neck. Skipping the stud check, using the wrong screws for your wall type, and forgetting to leave room for the soundbar are the other common ones.
